Mòthan otherwise known as Butterwort is a plant with folkloric significance in the Scottish Highlands. A person who has drank the milk or eaten the cheese of a cow who has eaten Mòthan was said to be immune from the mischief from the ’Sith’ (faerie folk), the evil eye or any malignant supernatural force forever. In Druidic folklore the Blackbird’s song was said to act as mediator between the Otherworld or spirit world and as a transcendental guide.
Natural dyes derived from oak, rust and alder along with 23 carat gold leaf create rich and jewel-like tones. The blackbird and the Mòthan are hand-carved from lino and printed onto silk. The Pearly Mòthan is hand and machine embroidered to create texture and depth.
